Nunca nuestra bandera se ha arriado ante el enemigo, espero pues que no sea ésta la ocasión de hacerlo.

Mientras yo esté vivo, esa bandera flameará en su lugar, y os aseguro que si muero, mis oficiales sabrán cumplir con su deber.

¡Viva Chile !"

En Honor al Capitán Arturo Prat Chacón (3 Abril 1843 - 21 Mayo 1879), máximo heroe naval de la nación y a todos los bravos que defendiendo su pabellón, cayeron aquel glorioso 21 de Mayo de 1879, durante el combate Naval de Iquique, en que saltó al abordaje desde su buque, la vieja corbeta esmeralda, sobre la Fragata Acorazada Huáscar de la Armada del Perú, comandada por el valeroso Almirante Miguel Grau.

Pero el hundimiento de la Esmeralda no fue el fin de la jornada, y no fue solo una gloriosa derrota, si no ese mismo día, Perú sufrió un severo golpe a su poder naval, con la perdida en la batalla naval de Punta Angamos de su acorazado Independencia, frente a la Covadonga de la armada de Chile, bajo el mando de Carlos Condell.

Es por eso que este 21 de Mayo -aún cuando mi dibujo no tenga semblanza alguna con el Capitán Prat- rindo este humilde homenaje, no sólo a Arturo Prat, si no a sus oficiales, marineros y grumetes, a Carlos Condell y su tripulación, y a todos los combatientes, que cayeron o sobrevivieron la guerra del Pacífico, y no sólo a los chilenos, si no también a todos los Peruanos y Bolivianos, que combatieron, y murieron o sobrevivieron, a aquel sangriento conflicto que enfrentó a tres naciones hermanas, entre 1879 - 1883

Originally an old drawing from 2010, I decided to fix and colour it for this 21 May 2015.

In a day like today, in 1879, during the Pacific war between Chile, Perú and Bolivia, in the port of Iquique, there was a naval battle:

Fought between the Armored Frigate of Perú, the "Huascar", and an old, wooden ship of Chile, the "Esmeralda".

However, in a combat imposible to win, the chilean comander, Arturo Prat, and his crew, decided to follow their duty to the end, and face the enemy:

And in a naval battle that surprised the international observadors, how an old ship survived in front of a battleship during long hours, and when wounded to dead, instead of abandoning the ship or surrending it, the Chilean crew tried to board the Peruvian battleship, being finally sunked the "Esmeralda", but with their banner high in their masts.

The actions of that day, meaned the lost of a ship from Chile, but Perú lost about of half of their naval power, as to the south of Iquique, in Punta Angamos, the Battleship Independecia of Perú, was sunked, in persecution of other small and old Chilean ship, the Covadonga, thanks to a brilliant (and risky) movement of Carlos Condell.

Also that day, began in Chile what we can call the "cult of a secular saint", of the Hero Arturo Prat.
