In Aiers, Hobgoblins are goblinoids of the Goblin family, offspring of a Goblin and an orc, being then a halfbreed -half-orc, or Half-Goblin-, told to be a menacing, larger and stronger form of goblins.
The physical apparence of the Hobgoblin will depend then of the race of the orc and goblin parents, existing several possible combinations -for example, a Ur Dur goblin and a Antorian orc, a Kaiehm green Orc and a green goblin, a Ur Dur goblin and a Galaw orc, etc-. As well, a hobgoblin can be born from two hobgoblins. Despise the many possibilities of apparences of the Hobgoblins -depending of their ascendence- in general they are a little smaller than their orc ancestors -and taller than the goblin ones-, and more inteligent that them.
With the centuries, from individuals there where developed several hobgoblin tribes and bands, as an independent group from either orcs and goblins. However, finding hobgoblins among orcs and goblins it's normal.
Among the Orcs, where size and strength it's what matter, often they are bullied and seen as a lower caste, useful maybe as servants and battle fooder. However among goblins, being the hobgoblins the larger and stronger -and more inteligent ones-, hobgoblin became the ruler class, of nobles and officers leading the goblin tribes and units of goblins, whom they bully and make to feel inferior.
They are known to be smarter than other goblinoid races, being renowned for their brutality and military skill, so they see it as a divine comnand to "guide they unlightened goblin brothers". And as such, Hobgoblins are adept at uniting fragmented goblin tribes under their command, and many times they are able as well to put under they service powerful creatures such as bugbears, ogres and trolls.
Within they own tribes, the hobgoblins have developed a semi-nomad way of living: they keep small herds of livestock, some survival agriculture, and more importantly, raiding, as a way to keep their economy. But when the resources are spent, the raiding aren't succesful -or they have become so annoying to their neighbours to make them determine to kick them out-, then the goblins abandone their fortified camps and settlements, looking for a new territory where to settle for other few years.
In their own tribes, hobgoblins always fight to determine dominance, but once this hierarchical relationship is established they tend to work well together.
Hobgoblins are omnivores, but prefer meat. Most tribes keep small herds of livestock, but the bulk of their food comes from raiding. They may enslave or capture members of other species and races more given to agriculture than hobgoblins are.
In the dark Legion of Demons, they often where subofficers and low level commander of goblin warbands during the early dark legion, but as goblin forces loss importance in the Dark Legions, the role of the hobgoblins as well decayed.
Again, she looks so fierce and tough! A good image of hobgoblins and their more intelligent martial prowess relative to goblins, and often orcs. She's less well equipped but in some ways looks more effective than the black orcs that replace her? She's a strong tribal warrior to be replaced with the more numerous and disciplined "mechanized" black orcs.
Those really big ears work well for her fierce look! One could see why goblins might have a closer association with elves than might be expected at first glance!
replaced with me more, more, much more numerous black orcs!
And yes, these big ears are quite normal in many goblin races, and seem to be a goblinoid genetic dominant characteristic in hobgoblins, being the smaller ears of orcs in hobgoblins recesive.
In Aels, both the elfkind and goblinoids are considered the two branches of the "Homo elvii", and it's suggested some ancestral common ancestors.
Specially considering for example the feral pigmy elves and some more primitive goblin tribes, who share size, ears, eyes -and pointed teeth!-
Black orcs eh? One demon to another: "We need ugly, dumb and obedient soldiers! Not good looking, capable ones with attitudes!"
"What's wrong with soldiers being attractive?"
"Plenty! Ugly soldiers are fearsome soldiers!"
"Attractive soldiers are more fun to command! Plus, enemies won't want to fight them so much as they will if ugly!"
"We'll do both! One set of orcs who are ugly, another that will be hot looking, but also dumb and obedient!"
"Yeah! Different tools for different uses!"
Hmn? Mr. Wakka Wakka and a pygmy elf? Some considerable similarities, one is much cuter than the other though! (Though Caregan might disagree!)
If nothing else, pygmy elves are the real "fairies" of Aiers. Though they aren't the nice and refined and winged kind--but instead are the naughty child-like little person kind!
One might speculate that they might whisper and giggle behind corners or various cover, leading to the theory that they could turn invisible? Likewise, by scampering on lines, or jumping from tree to tree, or rooftops, it might be believed that they can fly?

And you are quite right with the pigmy elf "fairies" :3
