"I don't want to. I walk funny with these boots!" the girl protested to her father. "And mom never made me wear boots! And neither I use them on the ship! Why I need to put them on now? I'm a werewolf! Werewolves doesn't use boots!"

"Cyrti. You are half werewolf. What does that mean?"

"That means that I can't transform and that sucks."

"It means that you are half human: a half-Nutk." her father said, sitting on the bed. "And we, the Nutks, have to pay each year a tax in blood for our demon lords:

They choose among our children, to serve the Dark Legion as they see fit, and the Clans, slaves and free men have to provide them, and so is the case of the cities."

"So what? YOU serve the dark legion! You are a pirate captain! Mom fights as well in the Dark Legion! Why shouldn't I do so as well?"

"Because the ones selected by the blood tax have to serve the legion, as long their masters seem fit, and for any duty. You wouldn't be pick to be a brave warrior, earning fame and glory under the black banners, but you could serve digging trenches, cooking, being a whore or the Demons-know-what."

"So what have that to do with the boots?

"Demons always pic the stronger to serve the dark legion... but as well, they love the half-breeds."

"Ah! At least somebody appreciates us!" Cyrti said.

"You don't want that sort of attention. Imagine they pick you up, to become a breeder of a new demonic race or something?"

"I have heard, a half-werewolf is even leader of a whole legion!"

"Only tales. So put your boots."

"I walk funny in these boots!"

"Better if they think you have a limp. So get you clothes and boots and let's go. Better to not make the demons wait".
