Description

The elf kid wandered in the smoking ruins of her village, sobbing: It was in the middle of the night when they came, attacking and destroying: She was suddenly waked up by her mother, who grabbed her from her bed as she still held in fear her doll:

"It doesn't matter what happens, whatever you hear, stay silent, stay hidden" she warned her, as she put her daughter in a small underground cellar where they hidden grain: there weren't place for anybody else... In the darkness of the cellar, she heard how her mother placed over the entry door of the cellar a pile of hay, hiding it...

Then, she heard battle roars, desperate, horrified cries... then wailing and moaning...  and finally, nothing.

She waited, for how long she didn't knew. Often she expected to heard her mother to return, to take her out of the cellar. As she was't coming, she wondered about leaving her hiding place. Then, she heard somebody come into their house.

She almost left the cellar, hoping to find again her mother... but instead, she heard the crashing of furniture being thrown all over the house, broken glasses and stabbed beds.

That wasn't her mother. She held her breath, as she heard them walking over her hiding place. They stabbed the hay over the entrance and she wanted to scream in terror... but they seemed satisfied.

After all these sounds, she heard nothing again...

but instead she could smell. Smoke.

The village was burning.

In her hideout, she almost suffocated, but fearing that they would be waiting outside, she remained in her hideout. She waited and waited, until she couldn't stood anymore the heat and smoke, and carefully she kicked with her last strength the door. Her house was as well now in fire. Her instinct told her to avoid leaving through the main door, so instead she jumped out of a window. Once out there, she saw their figures in the distance, so she slowly crawled away from the burning houses under the shadow of a bush, from where she could remain hiding, safe from the flames that were consumed the village, but from where she could watch her house, for when her mother return for her, so she doesn't get scared, thinking she was trapped in the fire.

She waited there for all the night for mom to come. She waited for most of the day, and nothing.

Finally, gathering all her courage, she left her hiding place in the bushes.

She wandered, calling her mother, but there was no one else. She walked to the gate of the village, and horrified she saw the headless corpses of all the villagers, and lines of pikes with heads on them. She screamed, closing her eyes, as in the glance she recognized the disfigured head of her father...

She came back to the smoking ruins of her house, sobbing. She collapsed in front of the door of the house, crying until she finally fell asleep exhausted... She didn't know how long she was there, when they returned.

They weren't looking for her: no, or they would have saw her before. They where wandering in the ruins with an empty supply bag, searching for something to fill it with, moving here and there with disappointment a rock or a charred door. She saw them, and grabbing her doll she tried to ran away, as quick as she could in her exhausted state.

It was precisely for her running, that they saw them. Despise she began running long before them, they quickly gained on her with their knock-kneed long strides. As she tried to see how they came closer, she tripped with some of the runs and rolled to the floor.

It was the end, she knew. Unable to see death coming to her, she sobbed with her face to the ground, as she already could feel the hammer falling over her head... but instead, she heard the beasts to discuss in their foul language. She was frozen in fear there, while the monsters yelled louder and louder, before one drew out his sword against the other:

She heard them groan and struggle, until finally one fell to the floor, mortally wounded... seconds later, the other leaned against a crumbling wall before collapsing to the ground, bleeding as well quickly to his death.

He said something with that horrible dialect to her...

She didn't understood the words, or the actions... Neither she was to stay to discover them: as the monsters had killed each other, she had her chance: she had to run. To escape. Escape. Escape.

Captain Grûk ordered to them fetch some supplies.

Orc Orders, and Orcs Do, so Szaul and Brirn picked up an empty supply bag and get away from the marching column, to look for something to put in the bag, or for sure Captain Grûk was going to put them as main course for the dinner if they were to return empty-handed:

However it was a bad time and place for foraging, as other regiments of the Dragongod of Brûm had already marched across these lands before in the crusade for good and justice against the wicked elves, and so the farmlands had already been sacked and the villages and farms were in ruins: the grains and cattle had already been ate, the supplies were gone and the wells have been poisoned, so there wasn't much less for them.

Szaul and Brirn only had found a pair of half dug out tubers, when they found a recently destroyed elven settlement and decided to try some luck there, but there wasn't much left... The ones who had come before them, had sacked and destroyed it consciously.

As they passed by the mauled corpses of the elves, quartered or hanging from trees, Szaul couldn't but wonder how all of this was for the ultimate good and was justified. Brirn stopped by their side for a more pragmatic reason, wondering about the state of decay of the meat to be acceptable as dinner.

Szaul negated with his head. It was taboo to eat the meat of the wicked -only dragons were to do that-. They entered then in the ruined village.

The Dragon Godking and his priests have told the orcs and men of Brûm that they where the ultimate force of good and justice, but sometimes Szaul was troubled with such heretic thoughts as the ones that passed in his mind in front of the slayed elves...

"LOOK!" suddenly said Brirn, dropping his helm and the almost empty supply bag, running after one of the wicked child of the elves.

The wicked child tried to ran away, but weakened and afraid it tripped, falling to the floor, and soon Brirn was over her, waving his hammer.

Szaul ran after him with his sword ready to strike down other of these wicked and heretic monsters of pointy ears...

But instead of a foul monster, he saw there a frightened little rabbit, as the elf child shivered in the ground.

"Stop!" Szaul said, grabbing Brirn from his hand.

"What is up with you?" he said surprised.

"Don't do it!" Szaul said, without understanding himself his impulse "She's only a kid!"

"She is a heretic monster, who will grow up to use a bow and arrows to kill innocent orcs. Leave me!" growled Brirn at him

"You will not kill that thing! It's just a child!"

"Banish these heretic thoughts, or I will report you to captain Grûk!" Said Brirn, freeing himself from Szaul's grip.

He raised again his hammer again, but Szaul pointed his sword at him. "Don't make me do this" he begged. They where old comrades of arms, after all.

"Don't think that I don't know how to deal with heretics" menaced Brirn, still with his Hammer ready to strike down the elf.

He couldn't see the eyes of Szaul behind his helm, but he could feel his determination...

Loved this. Still would like to know what Szaul said to her just before he died.
