The Howling Keep by Shabazik The Howling Keep by Shabazik

Crawling behind a bush, Bog the Barbarian, observed. He have done his homework, preparing to meet with the werewolf clan of the White Fang, and he was happy he went on a recon ahead, leaving in that Kanov family farm Bogilla to take care of Pumori -or it's really the other way around? that made him remember of the last incident with Bogilla, and he scratched his ass-.

As he had learned from before, the White Fang had a terrible reputation, even among other werewolf clans, with a reputation forged in blood mostly in the last two centuries of wars between the remnants of the Dark Legion in Polforia, where the Clan of the White Fang raised, as a force of chaos.

Just about two decades and half ago, a new leader raised in the White Fang, leading the clan in a serie of furious combats, raids and a thrist for blood and destruction, expanding the territories of the Werewolf pack.

This sort of thing really didn't impressed Bog tht much, having known from previous adventures and quests the normal quarrels and combats between the remnants of the once great empire of the Dark Legion in Polforia. However, even among them, the Clan of the White Fang had a bad reputation, as in difference to other werewolf clans of Mondwargh, rather than just governing over the farmers and servants, normally seen as useful slaves and only ocasionally as divertion of food, the White Fang destroyed and raided with rage all the settlements and villages, cutting down as well the trade routes, where before most of the werewolves prefered to exact tolls to the merchants for crossing their territories.

Supposedly, it was due the new leader, a now old werewolf matron -or an alpha bitch, for the werewolves- who had dominated the White Fang with a paw of iron...

...And now, he was to go there, to tell the feared tyrant, to tell her he found one of her lost pups. Of her or some of her clanswarriors. That was already bad. If they learn, their pup -Pumori- was lost, first of all, for following him, it wasn't going to be pretty.

...So that's why he decided to scout first.

While the werewolves in general aren't known for being builders, or liking the sedentary way of life, they didn't had problems in adapting sometimes what other's builded, for their own uses.

And the Howling Keep of the White Fang, was originally an old Castro Kanov, a fliehburg or refuge castle, that was for long abandoned before the White Fang matron, paranoid of possible attacks of other werewolves -or her own-, re-fortified the ruins, using it frecuently when her clan wandered in these parts of their territory.

Bog take then note of the Howling Keep, looking for possible escape routes in case something go wrong. And thinking as well in an excuse to go and knock the door of a werewolf den. That was never a good idea. Less with a clan like this one.

He noticed that the werewolves, while added some ramparts and woodworks, weren't really builders or experts in fortificantion, as they didn't cut down the forest near the keep, that grow almost near to their walls. An excelent cover for anybody wanting to get near the fortress, or to escape from it.

...now Bog needed to think how to enter there. And how to convince after that, the werewolves to leave him go. At least in one piece!

:iconvesha:, who win the "fashion contest" part of my contest, said that as award, I could see in his gallery and se if something inspire me.

Well, this did

Pumori, the half werewolf girl -only mentioned- it's from *kanyiko, as it is the White Fang.

XD
Bogwas using his mad skillz in scouting and his ranger levels!

Looks like a small fort, in the grand scheme of things...  But they did put a lot of work into defending the approach to it.

It's indeed a small fort, of a minor -but violent, and know for bloddy- werewolf clan of Mondwargh!

That castle will fall very easily. The wall facing us is completely uncovered by the towers or any other kind of window for arrows. Sappers will be able to get right up to the wall without any fear, except maybe boiling oil, but the defenders would expose themselves trying to do that. Very poor design! BOO!

It's a rather early castle, and I think many fortifications, rather than being highly sucesful in a defense, are more meant to avoid an attack!

This fortress itself, more than the fortress, the dangers come from the werewolves living inside these ruins!

Indeed!

-Would depend of the humanoid, thought. Elves hear better than werewolves, but in general, it's true-

so if an elf goes to a human settlement.... can he hear every bowelmovement in a 100 meter radius? because, that might explain the disgusted/snobbish attitude they have around humans.

Whoa... I really like Bog now! That must be points for foresight, initiative, scouting skills and planning. He's really showing himself a concerned father now, making sure nothing happens to Bogilla or Pumori.

Negative points, though, for naivety and stupidity, if he thinks the White Fang ever negociates, or would ever let him go alive. Or for thinking Pumori actually ever belonged to the tribe in the first place...!! But then again, it's his funeral, I guess...

Wonderful little fortress, though!! ^_^

Hey! As far he know, Pumori it's a member of the White Fang. So, logically, she it's from the White Fang.

She have said thought, she seem to have lived only in a farm... But Bog doesn't have time to wander in all the lands of the White Fang, with larger chances of a unhappy encounter.

He thought that the matron of the White Fang surely knows about all her clansmen, and will know about a lost pup. Specially a lost pup so special like Pumori!

So he think, surely he can give Pumori to their own, and they will give the little kid back to their parents. And he will avoid as well getting killed by them!

That's a plus.

The problem is, as Pumori ignores her own familiar history, and she doesn't seem to know that aside mommie, daddie and lil'bro, the white fang have a bunch of angry and mean werewolves XO!

So she hadn't, and couldn't, warn Bog about any of this.

D:!

And of course, Bog's being a bit naive, thinking his arrival would have gone unnoticed, especially with such a 'loud' adventurer like Bogilla (I'm sure her jammering and japping and complaining must have been heard miles around - "Shut up! I know how to use a bow! I don't want to be an adventurer! Stop bothering me with all of that points nonsense! etc...)

Knowing the White Fang, odds are that while Bog is trying to scout the White Fang's Howling Keep, a dozen or so pair of eyes are watching him from the surrounding trees and scrubs... >.<

And he's been even more naive, thinking Bogilla and Pumori would be safe in that Kanov farm. If the Pack's Keep is in walking distance of the farm, the farm must be in walking distance of the Keep as well... (DUN! DUN! DUUUUUN!! :fear:)

Of course, his reconnaissance will discover quite a lot of facts which are to his advantage: under "Granny Bitch", the White Fang has become a really "primitive" tribe - she doesn't believe in human/elven technology, such as archery or forged weapons: instead, she wants her tribe to use their own fangs and claws... <.<;

Also, there's a bit of discontempt in the tribe, with some of the younger wolves doubting the capabilities of their leader, but too terrified to challenge her for the leadership of the tribe...

could you please do a quick sketch of "granny"?

In her humanoid for, and werewolf one...

just a sketch, but big enough to see her factions? or do you have some reference pics (yours or of other) I could use?

As always, you do wonderful stuff! The "Howling Keep" is a great idea for a werewolf band! On one hand, the idea of trees growing close to the keep is bad, on the other, werewolves with senses of hearing and smell might not be so disadvantaged for their sloppiness!

Still, Bog is thinking well ahead. He has now well and truly proved that he's not just this happy idiot who makes stuff up as he goes along and survives by luck and determination and little else. Clearly, he's quite capable of planning events and contingencies, and being methodical. Of course he is! He uses the Vanolose system for adventurering! ;)

Really cool using Vesha's fort!

Well, he first thought in coming there with Pumori on his arms, and use her as a entry ticket!

However, from the news he picked about the White Fang, he decided that a bit more caution was in place :3

The trees growing close to the keep are because the werewolves hadn't give much more thoughts to these trees: They can serve as well for cover when arrows fly!

I wonder how much the werewolves use archers? Useful in many circumstances, but often will just be forgone for either attacking enemies as werewolves, or slinking away undercover as wolves?

I could see them using crossbows though. They'll be strong enough, and lesser trained soldiers can use crossbows.

Thanks for the info!

normally, the prefeered weapons for werewolves -if any- are light spears: they can use them in werewolf and humanoid form, shot them, and then transform, and if lost, it's not a great loss.

Sometimes for status and such, they use swords and some helmets and shields, but they need to discard them when shifting, and after the battle turn back and see if they find them. XD

But fighting from a fortified possition, gives them the chance to use weapons they would normally not use, as they can leave them and transform: Bows are an example of that...

but as well, as you said, not having much practice, in general they doesn't have very good archers!

for crossbows, they don't use much them mostly because they don't know how to use them. but if they trade, I guess they can try to use them!

I fear "Granny Bitch" isn't much of a believer in Elven/human technology, and doesn't really see any advantages in archery (something which will come back to haunt her véééry soon)...

It seems like Granny Bitch managed to expand White Fang territory by "hook and by crook", terror and intimidation and trickery. But has mostly weakened the clan in almost every way. If she pushes some other clan, or any powerful outsider too far, especially into a corner, they may just decide that they have no option but to go to war with the dreaded White Fang!

And then be surprised at how quickly the world's most feared werewolf clan collapses?

Although I suppose that fear of that possibility may be why the werewolves are using fortifications like the Howling Keep at all when so far they haven't much needed them?

A secret eh? Woah! That's piqued my curiosity!

A secret like knowing of a mountain of treasure, or something equivalent? Something that might warp her normal behavior over the years? She knows that it's great and powerful, and could change the destiny of whoever knows of it and can use it--but as a simple werewolf she hasn't been able to use it? Frustration getting to her as she ages?

Well, since all I have is baseless speculation of a secret that may or not be, I'll just have to wait! But I'm really interested now!

Well, it's not knowledge that she would like to share with the pack - much to the contrary. Revealing it would be rather earthshattering for the pack, given how she has led it over the past two decades...
