The best that money can buy

Henyr Eighttooth by fearydistress

The Vanolosé moved, uncomfortable, in his armour.

"Are you sure I must be here?" he asked to one of his bodyguards, some large Antorian Orcs of Schlobohm, mercenaries.

"Well sir... you are the General of Niidea... is good for the moral of the troops" whispered the large orc woman.

"oh... okey then" said the Vanolosé general, uncomfortable. His armour was dwarven made, the best of his kind (and the best that money can buy). But it was heavy, and the sun make it hot and him all sweaty. He preferred some more elegant garments!

With his little small eyes, the orc general looked to the horizon, as the forces under his command -and the enemy army- take their positions for the coming battle.

The Vanolosé orcs, unlike their goblinoid and orc brethren, aren't really warriors... but that doesn't mean, they have abandoned war. They where merchants. And sometimes war can be necessary and beneficial for trade and opening markets...

but even then, all of this war business where some quite irritant business...

The Vanolosé preferred to fight in the seas: they where sailors. Manoeuvring fast ships, or commanding heavy and armoured war vessels... but land battlefields? it was so barbaric!

But even there was necessary for the Vanolé Merchant Cities to have some of their own to command their armies -hired mercenaries, the best you can hire with gold... aaand peasants of their cities, pushed in service-.

But as well it was needed some tusked face to command these mercenary armies, to make them real Vanolosé armies... some commanding officers normally do it.

The charges of generals and officers where normally bought by the Vanolosé orc aristocrats, because they meant the possibility of rising in the politics of their cities, and as well, a good opportunity to make business with the supplies of their armies, selling and buying loots and more.

But aside from the money a Vanolosé general can do from his charge and the parties he can attend, sometimes they needed to do the boring and annoying work of commanding their forces.

Normally, such bothering work was leaved in hands of their mercenary second-in-command... but many times the Vanolosé generals needed to be there and here to take care of the appearances.

"So... against who where we fighting against?" asked the General of Niidea to his bodyguards, while petting in the head his war walrus, the pet of the army.

"Tokerí barbarians" said one of the large orc mercenaries.

"Oh, these barbarians don't even know what trade mean!" said annoyed the general. That mean after the battle there will be no much bounty of looting and such."What now?"

"You need to order the assault sir"

"Oh, yes. Began with that" said the Vanolosé, sweating inside his dwarven armour...

For fearydistress for his entry in my contest of the world of Aiers

I like the Vanolose orcs are merchants instead of warriors
