Description

Tell us other story, Uncle by Shabazik
Commission for :iconanimal-delos: , of his character Maylara Maltree.
He gave me as well a text for the image, that I can slighty modify for my universe of Aiers...

In my world, the elves age slower than humans during childhood (being until adulthood, two biological human years equal to an elf biological year).

So the adolescence of an elf -in my world of Aiers- are between the 24 and 36 chronological years (equivalent of the biological human age of 12 to 18 years).

Once a elf in my world reach adulthood, the growing process become even slower, being a elf biological year equal to 12 human biological years. :3
_______________________________________________

It was the Autumn season and the harvest had just ended in the Mountain Elf village high in the Moutains of Nohalion.

Food was well stocked and prepared for the coming winter season. However there still was much work to do, yet two young elves, a Drow and a regular Hebonnor were out in a nearby forest, on a bit of a hunting expedition but moreso just there for the thrill of it.

Maylara Maltree, drow raised by a couple of mountain elfs, hebonnor, held the hand crossbow in her hands, wearing now a dagger in a sheath around her waist, both items given to her by her adoptive Father Aldabeer, though she wasn't told they where from her biological parents, and so as far as she knew they were just regular presents, giving for the New Spring celebration, in the year she entered in her adolescence.

"This thing is pretty cool, don't you think, Neroe?" the young Drow May smiled at her one and only true friend in the entire village.

Neroe just smiled. "I suppose, as it's the only one here I've ever seen, but it isn't as personal as this."

she held up a small hunting bow given to her by her parents, who had picked a tree years ago, that was going to become her bow once she reached the adolescence.

...The parents of Neroe, normal Hebonnor, by this time knew she was friends with the only Drow in the village, but they figured it was only a rebellious phase, befriending with that potentially criminal and murderer... So they frowned when she leaved their home to go hang out with May, but didn't open their mouths, hoping that more soon than latter she recuperate her good judgement... but meanwhile they would never let her bring her home ever for fear it would sully things.

The two young friends who had only recently entered their adolescence picked out a good spot in a narrow valley, and waited for something to peak their interest.

Not that they really expected to see many if any animals in the area, as recently there where rumors bringed by a soldier of the Feudal Lord over these valleys, that once again Black orcs, the Koktos, had entered in their lands:

That was the first reason they parents didn't allowed them to go out of the palisade of the village, as the soldiers and local warlord where still hunting down the black orcs:
The Koktos are, normally, dangerous for any Hebonnor (unless a warrior), but the horror tales of them, telled during the long nights of winter, telled the specially horrible things they do to the elfs kids and woman, who had the unfortunity to be captured by the orc raiders...

But the two young elves, impacient to test their new weapons, discarded the amenace, thinkling that, since they hadn't hear from orcs near the village in years, they will be not near anyway, and so, they escaped the village to go hunting...

However what they tell to themselves, due to the rumors of orc raiders, they kept their ears open for as if they heard one coming they'd have to flee back to the village fast... but in their minds, that was just adding more fun for this hunting party...

Hours passed in the shadow of the canopy covering overhead, when there was a small snap of a twig.

The two friends ears perked up as they gazed upon a wild boar grazing in the nearby distance. May whispered to Neroe with a bitch of a chuckle.

"Heh, it looks kinda like an Orc, doesn't it?"

Neroe twitched and remarked back. "That isn't funny, May, there could be Orcs nearby, we have to be careful, you know."

Still, they both prepared their weapons, May lifting the hand crossbow in her right hand and using her left hand under it to steady her aim, while Neroe held the bow and pulled the arrow back, they turned to each other and nodded as they both fired at once, the arrow hitting the boar in the stomach whilst the bolt pierced it's head.

"Alright, we did it!" May cheered.

Neroe quickly placed a finger over May's mouth. "Shhhh!" she then whispered "are you trying to get us found out?"

May shook her head.

"Sorry, got carried away, but this will make a good dinner tonight, we will make our parents proud!"

"If they don't punish us for escaping" thinked Neroe, but she nodded, as she went over and examined the boar, humming a song to herself as she began to look it over and remove the bolt and arrow.

It was then that May noticed something strange in the air... what they smelled before wasn't only the boar... it was other scent in the air, that the wind bring it to her... she heard then near how a bush moved and footsteeps of heavy, fat fleet.

Neroe, near the dead wild boar and the smell of blood, and due her humming didn't sended it, and coming up behind Neroe, May saw a figure taken from the long winter night tales:

a grotesque figure, with long arms near the ground and bowlegged, with a skin grey as ashes and burned meat, meancing teeth and a red tongue, a single black orc, a Kokto from Tok Thoria, who was holding a morning star between his claws, was coming up behind Neroe...

In panic, the first reaction of May was to try to shoot her crossbow, but in her rush, she jammed the weapon... she'd really need to learn later how to take care and use it properly, but there where inmediate urgent needs:

"Neroe look out!!!" May shouted but seeing how close the Kokto was May knew that Neroe wouldn't be able to turn and react in time...

So, she quickly held out her hand, chanted a few key words she memorized, from an old sorcery and magic book she stealed years ago from an Elder of the village, that she'd she'd been studying for many years now in secret, and as her hand glowed a small ball of fire shot out from her palm:

She was nervous, and was the first time she tried to use her magic tricks in a real situation, aside firing against dummy-targets, little birds and vermin...

But hitting against a great black orc wasn't the same that lighting in fire lizards, and the first fire wall only burned the hairs in the forearm of the orc:

But where enough for the surprised orc, who thinked was attacking a single elf, stopped and looked with his eyes, incredulous, the smoking hairs of his arm:

May then prepared other, larger fireball, and hit the Kokto dead center in the chest, lighting it ablaze.

The black Orc wasn't in guard, as wasn't able to fully understand why suddendly his arm was in fire, and had forget of his surroundings, and when the second fireball hitted him, causing it to run screaming in the opposite direction before collapsing to the ground, fire flickering and dancing of it's body.

Neroe turned to May with eyes wide and jaw dropped. "May did you just..."

May quickly held her hand over her arm as she looked down and away embarassedly...

the one person she didn't want to find out the secret for fear of being judged was her only friend.

So she couldn't have been more surprised when Neroe ran over and hugged May tightly. "Thank you, you saved my life surely!"

May just smiled and looked into Neroe's eyes. "I... um... you are welcome." she was at a loss for words.

Neroe pulled back and just winked and whispered. "Do not fret, I will not reveal your secret. I think it is good though, one day it will come in very handy."

May nodded. "Like today?"

Neroe nodded back.

Shacking, and looking with horror the bodie of the orc, laying some metres away between the bushes, with the fire already off...

The two young friends went back to gather the boar, May picking up her crossbow and fiddling with it as it finally let off the shot, which proceeded to shoot by the boar in Neroe's arms and into the Kokto on the ground, wich yelled again: it wasn't dead, as some fire wasn't to kill so easily a black orc from the pits of the Nigromancer of Tok Thoria...

But a bolt in his ribs make him stop the "play dead" act, and he grunted and screamed for a moment, before quickly, the two young elf girls, picking some fallen branches, rained blows over the orc, before he was in silence...

"Eh... oops! I'm sorry! I will learn to use this better, I swear!" May said to Neroe, as they dropped the sticks

Neroe was white-faced but nodded and smiled nervously. "It's alright May, that could have been a lot worse..."

They looked alternatively their weapons, the boar and the orc in the ground, knowing that they should be safe this time he is dead... but none of them wanted to plunge the knife...

So quickly, they picked the wild boar, and the two proceeded back to the village with their take of the day...

Only when they where in front of the village and the defenses, feeling save, the booth girls smiled to each other:

They where adventurers! No one other kid of their age had ever faced an Orc!

But when they saw their parents waiting in front of the gate of the town, again, their smiles diseapeared...

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile in the forest, a group of Koktos raiders happened upon their fallen comrade.

When the leader of the band arrived, he founded the scout dead... with the skull opened with an axe blow.

Other scout, the first to find the body, with his axe soaked in dark blood, say seriously.

"Damn Elfz! They killed Krozztarr!"

"How it happened?"

"They kutted hiz head. With Axe!"

The Orc leader see the body, the axe of the scout, and the wounds of the corpse...

"Arre you zurre he waz dead when you arrrrived?

"My worrd az loyal believerr of Khorr, God of thunderr"

"... didn't you wherre a followherr of the God of Worrmz?"

"ANYWAY!. He waz dead. And he zmell tazty."

"Yeah. But why the pointy Earrz will have kokked Krozztarr?"

"It doezn't matterr Bozz! Now we had dinerr!"

"Trrue."

As the Orcs proceeded to cut everybody the rations of meat for their dinner and maybe next days, the boss, as he eated a black hearth, to gain the force of Krozztar, he was trying to think a reason, scratching his head, what it meaned the crossbow bolt they finded... as far he know, the pinky pointy ears from around only used regular bows and arrows...

Maybe there where humans in the area?

But could not afford to waste time on thinking, as the tasty half-coocked Krozztar meat was going to be finished, and he was still hungry.

Maybe other day, he will think of this.
