All that work to pile stones atop one another--and somebody wants to just knock them down!
That's why gates are made of wood. It's not only more convenient to swing back and forth and to set them in place, it also provides a weak point to attack and a place to defend! And it discourages the attackers from sapping the important walls! LoL
