I smell fairy

The forest, always full of live and sounds of all kind, as the birds singing their songs, it became unnaturally quiet.... before that drowning silence was broken by the sounds of metal clashing, branches being broken, heavy breathing, cursing and heavy foots trampling on the forest ground.

The cause of the silence that preceded them, but as well of all that ruckus: orcs.

One of the orcs leading the column -a tracker- stopped in the middle of his march, sniffing the air. His comrades clashed against him and cursed the interruption.

"I smell... fairy" he said, as he readied is weapons, looking suspiciously at the nearby vegetation.

One of the orcs behind him sneezed, his nose stuffed due allergies. Cursed forests, he blunted, before adding:

"You can't smell fairies: Fairies don't exist you fool!" he growled, smacking the tracker in the back of his head, making the helmet ring like a bell. 

"I said: I smell fairies! And when I say I smell something, I DO!" the tracker protested, as he fiddled with his helmet, trying to get it back in the right position. 

The second orc hit him again, this time with the shaft of his spear.

"Don't be silly and keep walking. It wasn't a fairy. It was an elf. Hgroggar saw her, before she entered in the forest. A High elf."

"It was a sylvan elf" corrected Hgroggrar with an uninterested air, as he profusely sweated under his armor while he decapitated with his scimitar some innocent forest flowers, guilty only of being in the range of the bored orc.

"High elf" an orc said behind in the line, looking for a fight. He too, was bored of this ghost hunting. 

The scout ignored his comrades, staring at the treetops.

"Fairy, High or sylvan elf, I smell magic, anyway" the tracker said.

"You can't smell magic" argued other of the orcs of the band, as they looked around the trees of the damned forest.

"Well, but I'm sure, I smell something here... and when your damned tracker says, he smells something, you would do good to hear him, instead of discussing what's he smelling!!"

"Smell this" said annoyed the orc with the spear, before punching in the nose the sniffer with his brass-knuckles. He didn't liked forests at all. "There is no stupid elf. We could be drinking back in our hole, instead, as any sensible orc would do during a terrible hot day" he protested.

With the scout in the floor, cursing and holding his bleeding nose, his comrades couldn't see, smell or hear anything weird over their own ears, sweat and curses.

As they decided they where losing their time anyway, they continued their march, grumbling and cursing. 

Hiding in the top of a three, Kryliah, a young sylvan elf girl, breathed relieved...

Maybe it was thanks to the magic of fairies that the orcs didn't found her!!

She shivered at the mere thought what they would do to a young elf damsel that fell into their claws...

...but this wouldn't stop her of her quest, to discover her true origins!

for Xylinthia for her entry in contest of the world of Aiers, with her character Kryliah, a silvan elf girl raised among the High Elves, who looking for her origins stumbled in one of the supposed enchanted forests, near some kaiehm green orcs territory.

In my world, Fairies are as mythical as in our own, but there are tales about them... maybe Xylinthia had an encounter with a fairy? Or was her imagination, like the older elves will tell her?

When drawing this, I remembered an old illustration of Fredrik K T Andersson , so I reference that. :3
